One of the best things about running an online magazine/blog is the different types of people you get to meet. Just last week I met up with Vanessa (pictured above), the Australian born scientist behind the collagen supplement Formetta.
To be honest until that point I didn’t know a thing about collagen and it’s benefits or the fact that your body stops producing enough as you age. What I have noticed as time goes by is how my hair and nails seem to be more and more affected by the different seasons. I once went through a whole Winter feeling like my nails were simply shrinking instead of growing each day. Promise I never bite them, so this was a truly weird feeling. I have tried taking various hair and nail supplements but until now the main thing that has helped has been summer, sunshine and a good dose of ocean.
Vanessa introduced me to the concept of a collagen supplement that would help not only hair and nails but also bone and joint strength. I then went off and did some more independent research on the topic, this post summarises what I found out.

Why You Need Collagen as You Age and the Truth about Collagen Supplements
Collagen is one of the major building blocks of bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The word collagen comes from the Greek word kolla, which means glue.
It helps skin cells adhere to one another and also gives the skin strength and elasticity. Collagen production decreases with age, contributing to skin wrinkling and sagging.
Since your body’s collagen production declines as you age and you need adequate collagen for strong bones, joints, and skin, adding more collagen to your diet sounds like a no-brainer. However from my current research I have learnt that it pays to check out what is inside a collagen supplement before simply taking it.
It was exactly this that lead Vanessa to create Formetta. She was looking on the market for a good collagen supplement for herself but never managed to find one that truly convinced her with it’s ingredients. Hence she decided to make her own.
As you age taking a collagen supplement can:
Help improve hair and nails
One of the first improvements you are likely to see after starting a collagen supplement is stronger hair and nails as well as more of a glow on your skin. I have just been taking mine for a week now so can’t wait for more but I have noticed that my nails have already stopped breaking.
Help with arthritis and other joint issues
Taking collagen can help stimulate tissues and rebuild the collagen to protect joints.
Help protect against bone loss
Our bones are made out of collagen so naturally as we age and loose collagen our bone mass and strength suffer too. Of course continuing to exercise is also an important factor against bone loss.
Can help build muscle
Increasing evidence shows taking collagen can help you build muscle and even possibly loose some fat. Of course you also need to exercise for this to be truly effective.
Can help heal wounds
As collagen can help to strengthen skin tissues it can also help to regenerate cartilage and thus heal wounds faster.
Can help to ease digestion
Some people have found taking a collagen supplement has helped stomach issues such as heartburn and bloating. If you are suffering from these conditions be careful to consult a doctor before assuming taking a collagen supplement will do the trick though!
The truth about collagen supplements…
There are many types of collagen, each composed of different “peptides” or amino acids. Choosing the right collagen supplement for you can be tricky.
A few tips are:
- Choose a collagen supplement with as few simple ingredients as possible – collagen peptides are recommended.
- Make sure there are no added sugars.
- Check the dosage of all ingredients, many brands other than Formetta contain less than 10g collagen and therefore will not be effective.
- Make sure it’s free from heavy metals and toxins.
Why I’m sold on Formetta
Firstly Vanessa from Formetta has done a lot of research on this and come up with a formula that is readily absorbable. She believes in her formula and drinks it herself.
There is no big corporation behind Formetta, simply one person’s true passion.
Nothing irrelevant in the formula – no synthetic filters or preservatives and it is sugar free. (see the ingredients here)
I love the easy daily dose packages. This makes it easy to take away when travelling too.
The fact that it looks like aperol spritz – as bad as this might sound it is the truth. I like to have a bit of a giggle and pretend I am having an apero when I take my daily Formetta.
This post was written in collaboration with Formetta, however I did conduct my own independent research and all opinions are my own.
If you would like to try Formetta for yourself check out the online shop here.
