One of the best things about running an online magazine/blog is the different types of people you get to meet. Just last week I met up with Vanessa (pictured above), the Australian born scientist behind the collagen supplement Formetta.

To be honest until that point I didn’t know a thing about collagen and it’s benefits or the fact that your body stops producing enough as you age. What I have noticed as time goes by is how my hair and nails seem to be more and more affected by the different seasons. Collagen is one of the major building blocks of bones, skin, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The word collagen comes from the Greek word kolla, which means glue.

It helps skin cells adhere to one another and also gives the skin strength and elasticity. Collagen production decreases with age, contributing to skin wrinkling and sagging.

Since your body’s collagen production declines as you age and you need adequate collagen for strong bones, joints, and skin, adding more collagen to your diet sounds like a no-brainer. However from my current research I have learnt that it pays to check out what is inside a collagen supplement before simply taking it.

Some people have found taking a collagen supplement has helped stomach issues such as heartburn and bloating. If you are suffering from these conditions be careful to consult a doctor before assuming taking a collagen supplement will do the trick though!

There are many types of collagen, each composed of different “peptides” or amino acids.  Choosing the right collagen supplement for you can be tricky.

A few tips are:

  1. Choose a collagen supplement with as few simple ingredients as possible – collagen peptides are recommended.
  2. Make sure there are no added sugars.
  3. Check the dosage of all ingredients, many brands other than Formetta contain less than 10g collagen and therefore will not be effective.
  4. Make sure it’s free from heavy metals and toxins.
