Riffelalp Resort 2222m – The Best Matterhorn View Experience Ever!

Hi Everyone,

Warning, before you continue reading I need to tell you Zermatt is addictive, once you have been you continue to have a yearning to go back. This is my second visit to Zermatt this year and I certainly plan on returning soon. (see article to previous visit here).

This visit I went with my daughter Cassia. Usually we go on a special Mother – Daughter trip each year but last year we never managed so it was extra special to finally be doing a trip together again. Not to forget that it was her 21st Birthday the Friday after we got back so it was also a bit of an early Birthday treat.

We stayed at the Riffelalp Resort 2222m is the highest spa resort in Europe. It also has the very best view of the Matterhorn that you could possibly dream of. Having fun in the 35° heated outdoor pool we almost felt as though we could reach out and touch the famous Matterhorn itself.

Riffelalp Spa Resort 2222m – The Best Matterhorn View Experience Ever!

Getting there

Zermatt is totally car free so you may take the train from Visp or Täsch. Visp – Zermatt is  a super pretty 1 hour train trip through the mountains so be prepared to have your breath taken away here.

Once in Zermatt you will be met by the Porter from the Riffelalp Resort 2222m who will take care of your bags and lead you to the Gonergrat train – just across the road. Note the late trains leave at 9:50 pm and 11:30 pm and there are no trains operating between 7:24 pm and 9:50 pm!

At the Riffelalp stop your bags will be placed on the hotel snow mobile and if you’re lucky you too can get a ride right to the hotel front door.

Otherwise it’s a 10 minute walk through what could be described as a touch of Narnia.

 

First impressions

When you first walk into the hotel the cute sheep all around and wooden bears make the hotel seem like a little Swiss Disneyland… Of course Cassia and I had to make friends with the bears – smile!

 

Rooms

There are 65 rooms and 5 suites. Nearly all have a balcony with the breathtaking views of the Matterhorn.

We had a Matterhorn Superior room – approx 40 square meters with balcony and the best Matterhorn view ever. I loved the super comfy beds and pretty interiors with a rustic touch yet most up to date facilities. The bathrooms too are super nice with a lovely mix of grey marble and rustic wooden ceilings.

 

Food

Currently you can choose between eating at the following three restaurants:

Ristorante Al Bosco

The elegant Restaurant with sun terrace.
«Italianità under the Matterhorn».

Bar 2’222m

A cosy bar area with fireplace and sun terrace plus view of the Matterhorn.

We enjoyed the piano playing during the afternoon of our arrival as well as sipping cocktails in the bar on our first evening.

Restaurant Alexandre

Our favourite restaurant with it’s cosy atmosphere and pretty view of the Matterhorn. The menu consists of a combination of regional and mediterranean specialties.

The Spa

This is seriously one of the most beautiful hotel spas ever. Apart from the fact that the outdoor pool has such a spectacular view, the indoor spa area also has lots to discover.

Be sure to try out the Schönbiel cave steam bath with a view of the Matterhorn…

Or venture into the secret world of the Chriitter -Grotta…

 

Ski In Ski Out

Of course being up at 2222m one of the coolest advantages is being able to simply start skiing right from the hotel front door. Not to worry if you haven’t brought your ski equipment with you as Bayard the onsite sports shop and rental will come to the rescue.

I was ever so lucky to try out the special Swiss Zai skis. Zai is a relatively young Swiss company and is the worldwide leader in the use of new and revolutionary materials during the ski manufacturing process. Find out more information here.

 

Fun with the sheep

Coming from New Zealand I of course had to have a little fun with the sheep…

Trendiest mountain restaurants

You’ll find the trendiest mountain restaurants at the hamlet of Findeln. This was once a “Maiensäss”, where many Zermatt families lived and worked during the summer months, growing grain and grazing cattle.

These pictures were taken at Chez Vrony which is particularly famous for it’s hamburgers.
