How to Add Your Personality to a Capsule Wardrobe

How to Add Your Personality to a Capsule Wardrobe

Hi Everyone,

Let’s start by defining what a capsule wardrobe actually is. For one it’s the perfect way of ensuring you always have something to wear without the trauma of an overfilled wardrobe.

A capsule wardrobe consists of a number of carefully chosen items that can all be intermixed and worn with each other. Typically a capsule wardrobe will only have 30 – 40 pieces.

By default a truly functioning capsule wardrobe will contain a lot of neutral tones or blacks and navy. Depending on the season as a winter capsule wardrobe tends to be darker than a Summer one. If you are not careful it can be quite easy to totally strip your personality when creating a capsule wardrobe. Such a shame, we all have interesting personalities and should never under estimate the importance of showing who you are to the world.

The tendency is not to go for bold prints. However one piece of bold print amongst an otherwise plain wardrobe can also be quite stunning. Certainly a start to adding your personality to a capsule wardrobe.

Keep reading for three simple rules that show you,  “How to Add Your Personality to a Capsule Wardrobe”.

  1. Choose Quality

In order to truly add your personality to your capsule wardrobe the first step is to choose pieces from high quality brands. Stay away from cheaper high street stores.

Concentrate on finding interesting high quality designers that not everyone else is wearing and with good quality pieces that will stand the test of time.

The principle behind a capsule wardrobe is to keep pieces for several years to come. Replacing a few pieces each year/season to keep your overall look up to date and make sure any worn out or ill fitting pieces are liquidated.

This outfit has been carefully put together from one of my favourite Italian designers COSY SUNDAY – also available online.

2. Design

Be sure to choose pieces which have a classic yet different at the same time, design to them .

As an example the trousers in the picture above may seem like simple classic trousers but what makes them extra special is the cinched high waist which gives the effect of elongating the legs. The top is crop and sits just right by the waistband of the trousers. If you have a long body the fit will be a little different on you, possibly revealing a little midriff but this can also look nice, even on older women as the trousers are high waist.

Also the t-shirt shown first, is a little special in that it’s exceptionally wide and cropped at the same time. Made out of a special cotton that washes well, keeping it’s shape and original look.

3. Add Colour/Pattern

Yes, the idea of a capsule wardrobe truly is that all pieces can be intermixed and worn with each other. However this does not exclude adding colour or pattern.

The trick is to choose your colour carefully. Something that really does go with all the other pieces you have in your capsule collection.

When it comes to patterns it is easiest to stick to something classic like stripes, spots or gingham. This does not rule out other patterns. For example having one striped piece and one way out patterned piece could also work and really give a very personalised look to your capsule wardrobe.

In Summary

To recap the three simple rules that show you how to add your personality to a capsule wardrobe are:

  • Quality
  • Design
  • Colour/Pattern

Remember:

The principle behind a capsule wardrobe is to keep pieces for several years to come. Replacing a few pieces each year/season to keep your overall look up to date and make sure any worn out or ill fitting pieces are liquidated.

Buy each piece carefully and think of it as an investment. Buy less but better.

I recommend checking out the whole collection from COSY SUNDAY for a truly special capsule wardrobe and can honestly say I have been wearing my pieces over and over and over again – smile!
