Wedding anniversary’s – especially round ones – are that time when you really want to do something special together. It’s good for the soul and heart. Memories flood back of when you got married and it’s the best opportunity ever to show how much you still mean to each other…
We wanted to go somewhere special for our 20 year wedding anniversary. Somewhere a little off the beaten track, luxurious and not too far away. Hostal de La Gavina met all 3 criteria hands down!

A little history
Don’t you just love the story behind these wonderful luxury resorts? Hostal de la Gavina began in the early 1920s as Josep Ensesa i Gubert persuaded his father to buy the land that stretched from the bay of Sant Pol to the long Sa Conca beach, now known as S’Agaró.
The idea was to build a garden city/hotel which overlooked the Mediterranean. The hotel opened in 1932 and soon became the most luxurious in the area and one of the best in Spain and Europe. It was the first hotel in Spain to become member of the prestigious association Leading Hotels of the World.
It has been visited by many famous personalities including Elisabeth Taylor, Ernest Hemingway, Sean Connery, Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro and more recently Lady Gaga to name a few!
Since the early 1950s it was the setting of several famous Hollywood movies like; “Pandora” with Ava Gardner, “Suddenly Last Summer” with Elizabeth Taylor and “Mr Arkadin” by Orson Welles.

Things to do nearby
The hotel is set on a stunning clifftop, with a wonderful path around. We really enjoyed exploring along the paths. Walking in one direction and running along the other side. Reto loved the fact it went up and down. I decided to walk up the steep staircases.
The ideal place to perfect hovering and rock climbing skills…
Visit Girona
Girona is approximately a half hour drive away. A very pretty medieval village with an annual world famous flower show. We were lucky enough to experience the preparation as this year it took place the day we left.
Gastronomy
The hotel has an amazing 8 options for places to eat. We got to try out 5 within 3 days.

You can just imagine Ernest Hemingway sipping his Daiquiri here.
3. El Barco
As we arrived super late on our actual wedding anniversary – this is where we celebrated our 20 year anniversary.
4. La Taverna del Mar
A wonderful beach side restaurant with fabulous seafood and a great view out onto the Mediterranean.
5. Candlelight
Completely renovated in 2016 with live music playing each evening. Such a romantic place to dine. The menu is by Michelin Star holder Romain Fornell.

Dearest Yvonne. You are so right to celebrate special events and browsing through your photo diary, is seems the two of you have more than done so. Wow! The costa brava is such a beautiful place to visit, isn’t it? And your hotel looks more than romantic.
