Each year I reflect on what my main learnings of the past year were. These are cornerstones I take with me for future years. I’m sharing them with you as you might also find these learnings useful.
They might seem pretty obvious when you first read them however the reality is that we often go through life missing the obvious.

The power of reflection
Taking time to sit back and reflect upon a difficult situation will always prove beneficial.
The number one rule is never let anyone pressure you into making a decision about something unless you know it is right. At the same time if something makes you feel either extremely sad or angry, always take time to give an appropriate response.
This year I learnt how to use reflection to turn negative situations into a positive outcome. It is such an exciting and powerful tool to master – I can only recommend it to each of you.
Note a key trick to being able to do this is letting go of any negative thoughts. Instead focusing all your energy on the positive.
2. Believe in yourself
When I first started FunkyForty I realised that if I was going to create an online magazine I would need to do what I felt was right without first asking the opinion of others.
Over time many people freely give me feedback about what they feel to be good and what not. It became easy to fall into the trap of listening to them and then finding myself relying on what others thought instead of doing what I felt to be right.
Fact is no matter what you do you can never do it right for everyone so the most important thing is to ensure you do it right for yourself.
Another even more important realisation was that after 8 full years of FunkyForty.com I have become a subject matter expert in my field and I do know what works and what not. This is valuable knowledge which I learnt to use and pass on instead of being lead to do things which I felt in advance were not going to work.
3. Successful people smile!
Smiling is the strongest accessory anyone can have. Try once to smile at someone who is looking grimly at you. Instead of being upset at their look, come back with a joke and try to make them smile. You’ll be surprised how often this works. In addition you end up leaving a very positive memory wherever you go. People like to work with those that make them feel good. So share a smile and spread the happiness. You too will become happy and successful!
In the photo above I am at the Zurich hairdresser Szena Les Coiffeurs. It is truly one of my favourite places to go to in town as each an every visit I end up having such a laugh and walk out feeling very special (because of the great wonders that have been done to my hair – smile).
