Mum & Daughter Ear Piercing, the New Hype – 11 Facts You Need to Know

Picture taken live during an actual piercing.

Hi Everyone,

Remember the days you used to beg your parents to be allowed to get your ears pierced. Now the tables have really turned. The latest hype is for Mum and daughter to get their ears pierced together. A new way to bond. Instead of wearing his and her jewellery, why not wear a matching earring to your Mum. Or do both – smile. Such a great Christmas idea.

I used to think getting your ears pierced was all about being able to wear pretty jewellery in your ears full stop. However I have recently learnt there is so much more to the act of getting your ears or any other part of your body pierced. Did you know there is a special piercing which is said to cure migraines? More about that further down.

Many people use piercing as a type of therapy.  Just recently I met a woman with her entire ear pierced – it literally looked like a piece of art.  Asking her why so many she explained to me she leads an incredibly stressful life – each time she gets her ear pierced it is like therapy. The feeling after was one of strength giving her the courage to carry on.

Holding these up against your ear is a great way to see what an earring will actually look like – or to determine where you would like your piercing.
11 Facts you need to know before you get a piercing:

You might already know some of these facts but it does pay to re read them before you get your piercing done.

1. Gun versus needle

Whilst a gun piercing may seem quicker it actually rips your skin and will cause more damage than a proper surgical piercing needle.

2. The best way to clean

The best way to clean your piercing is by using a salt water solution. Either buy one pre made or create your own. In any case remember to clean your fresh piercings at least twice a day if not more.

3. Healing time

A piercing heals from the outside in so while it may look heeled from the outside the inside could still be in recovery mode. The recommendation is to wait at least a year to be totally sure.

Another fun way of seeing what an earring will look like in an ear.
4. The length of the piercing stick

The back end of the earring used as the piercing earring should be longer than a normal earring. This allows for potential swelling of the ear.

5. The best material to use

It is best to get your ears pierced with titanium first to avoid potential allergies. However if you already know you are not allergic to gold you could try this too.

6. Where to use straight versus banana piercings

Banana piercings are round like a banana and are recommended for any helix piercings.

7.  The migraine fixer

Daith piercings are said to cure migraines. This has not been clinically proven but I have read a lot about it and have spoken to 5 different people who claimed it really worked for them.

8. Less pain without a countdown

Many people like to be prepared for the hole coming through and ask for a countdown. This instantly stiffens the body and is actually more painful an experience than if you don’t ask for one. The actual piercing happens much faster than we imagine.

9. Infections may always happen

It doesn’t matter how long you have had a piercing it may get infected again. Things like a cold or virus also have an impact on your piercing. Simply continue to clean your piercings daily.

10. Don’t panic

Never panic about piercing infections – in general they always heal. It just takes time and proper care.

11. Eat first

Never get your ears pierced on an empty stomach – this increases the risk of you potentially fainting as a result.
