Top 5 Health Benefits of Scented Candles at Home & Which are Best

Hi Everyone,

The end of year can often be a tough time for people on many fronts. Especially in Europe as temperatures cool and Winter sets in. It’s a time where we all need to take a little more care of ourselves to help us get through. Believe it or not a simple ritual such as burning your favourite scented candle before sleep each night can have a huge impact on your overall wellbeing.

You do however need to be careful about which candles you choose to burn. Instead of paraffin choose candles made from coconut oil, beeswax or soy. Also choose scents that come from high quality essential oils instead of synthetic perfume.

I choose to get my candles scented room sticks from Styled Home Objects as I know Alexandra (the owner) takes great care in researching the candle brands she stocks. Her favourites are available online here.

Top 5 Health Benefits of Burning Candles at Home & Which are Best

  1. Improves the mood / stress reliever

Scented candles can play a significant role in alleviating the physiological effects of stress and worry.

Certain candles are crafted specifically to activate chemicals in the brain, like serotonin and dopamine, to support a positive mood. Clary sage is a particularly good smell for this.

I personally am a great fan of the Sage scented Onno candle – available online here.

2. Calms the mind

Aromas such as geranium, lavender and peppermint have been proven to be useful for the treatment of various psychological and physiological disorders through the burning of aromatherapeutic candles.

My recommendation here is the Calming Park candle “Spa de Provence”  – available online here

3. Stimulates Memory

Did you know that specific scents in candles can stimulate memory in the brain. The limbic system is the part of the brain that is home to our memory and emotions. I recently learnt that scent, emotion and memory are inexplicably intertwined.

Vanilla, rosemary and peppermint are especially good scents for this.

A favourite vanilla room scent of mine is the Locherber Milano Bourbon Vanilla  – available online here.

4. Supports a restful sleep

Good sleep hygiene is something that we are becoming more aware of. Practicing good sleep hygiene means limiting blue light by disconnecting from technology at a certain time each day.

Candlelight evenings are incredibly beneficial for maintaining natural sleep rhythms. Plus now they have the added bonus of helping to use less energy/ electricity.

For a fantastic zen feeling my favourite is the Zanzibar Onno candle – available online here

5. Energy booster

Scented candles not only have a calming effect – they can also act as an energy booster. Something we could all do with as the days get shorter and colder.

In general citrus scents are the best for boosting energy and focus.

I am in love with the citrus smell Cape Ivory Onno collection – available online here.

This was me last Friday when I spent the first day since years in bed with a bad cold (not Corona).

In any case I’m convinced that staying in bed reading with my Calming Park cashmere candle burning really did help a speedy recovery… oh and the fact that dear Mr FunkyForty brought me a lite snack lunch in bed – smile!
