Mode Suisse 2023 – Much More Than Just A Fashion Show

Dear Everyone,

Last night’s Mode Suisse started with a crash – literally, when a glass splintered onto the runway just as the show was about to begin. Swiss efficiency paid off tremendously, seconds later every trace of glass splinter was already removed and the show could go on!

As an introduction, Mode Suisse is the one annual event that brings together everyone in the Swiss Fashion Industry. It is also a great door opener for local designers and design students.

At this years show practically every designer had a message to portray to the audience. A message that looked at our World as it is, as opposed to focusing on beauty or fashion alone. Many sociopolitical topics were raised throughout the evening. This is a trend that you can see happening more and more during Fashion Week’s – also in Milan and Paris. I guess this stands to reason, given that what we wear says so much about who we are.

One of my favourite collections was that from Mara Danz who returned back to Glarnerland, Switzerland after a 2 year stint working for Maison Margiela in Paris. Starting her label in 2021. I loved the name of her collection “If you don’t let us dream, we won’t let you sleep”. With that in mind her collection was full of fabulous prints and futuristic designs which could almost be out of a science fiction film. (Highlights from her collection pictured further down).

Rafael Kouto & Bernina collaborated for this years Mode Suisse show. The emphasis on their collection being that social equality can only be reached with true authenticity. That we should continually adapt to social changes of our time.
