Hi Everyone,
This weekend Mr FunkyForty and I were lucky enough to experience a little slice of heaven nestled in the heart of the Bernese Alps – Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa resort.
Built over 350 years ago as a mineral bathhouse, this grand dame has aged like fine wine (pun intended) – more about this further down. Offering the perfect fusion of heritage and modern luxury whilst maintaining a cosy homey feeling at the same time.
Only 2.5 hours drive from Zurich makes Lenk the perfect weekend getaway. However don’t be fooled, we could have happily stayed longer. What really struck us was the mesmerising alpine panorama all around. Giving us the feeling of being in a live Disney-world.
Despite only staying 2 nights, once we left we were both feeling totally refreshed. There’s certainly something to be said for fresh mountain air. Or was it the adventurous 10km scooter trip we did down Betelberg – smile!

Hello from the entrance area. Note the art behind me – it has a special feature so that it looks totally different depending from where you look at it.
The first thing we did after checking in was discover the wine cellar…
The wine cellar
It was with great pride that we were lead into the hidden, underground wine cellar. There are currently over 600 different types of wine stored here.
Some fabulous world-class labels. I had a tough time getting Mr FunkyForty out of there. He decided the wine cellar alone was worth the trip to Lenk.
Our room
We had the most beautiful and spacious corner suite. It even had its own fireplace and two balconies, each with full mountain views. The attention to detail with plants, flowers and art made our room feel more like a home than simply a hotel room.
Our delicious welcome treats.
Bedroom and balcony.
The bathroom was walkthrough from the entrance right into the bedroom. We had a double sink and separate glass shower. Plenty of room for the two of us to get ready simultaneously in the mornings…
1st August Dinner
We arrived on 1st August which happens to be Swiss National day, which of course meant there was a special Swiss Birthday dinner in Restaurant Spettacolo – starting with apero outside on the terrace accompanied by live alpine music.
Of special note is the fact that this is the only hotel in Switzerland which serves the Palmes d’Or champagne by the glass. I certainly recommend trying a glass on your next visit to the Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort.
Dinner was a fabulous six course meal including an xxl cheese buffet…
After dinner I flaked out on a nearby sofa lounge – but only for one minute before being dragged off my Mr FunkyForty to experience the live music and have a nightcap at the bar.
The next day:
The next day we leisurely strolled down to breakfast, also in the Restaurant Spettacolo. It was so nice knowing that breakfast would be until 11am and they don’t mind if you stay there longer – it is just that’s the time the sumptuous buffet gets cleared away.
After breakfast we decided to drive as far as we could to the end of the valley. This was where I discovered that there was a 10km scooted ride from the top of Betelberg right back to our hotel. The gondola up Betelberg is literally right next to the Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort so it didn’t take long to get Mr FunkyForty to come up the mountain with me. But first I had to take a few pictures of the cute mountain houses…
Afternoon at the 7sources spa
One of the best things about the spa is the fact that you can use the outdoor pool and enjoy the spectacular mountain panorama regardless of the weather. This to me is truly a particular ‘feel good area’.
The name 7sources is derived from the 7 dramatic waterfalls in the Simmen area that source the waters of the spa.
There are several different saunas and steam room to choose from. Personally I love the fact that most of them have fabulous mountain views – making the sauna experience even more special.
Dinner tonight in restaurant Oh de Vie
Oh de Vie restaurant has a lovely Belle Epoque feel to it. The delicious menu is Mediterranean also with a carefully curated wine list. Being a smaller cosy restaurant makes it perfect for romantic evenings or a more exclusive culinary moment.
A little look at what we ate – hope you’re not too hungry just now – smile!
Once again we finished the evening in the communal bar/lounge area.
Conclusion
We had a truly fabulous weekend and have decided the Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort is truly the perfect resort for all ages. There’s a great kids club for young families. Plenty of adventure activities in the area for the young at heart, especially with the mountain gondola right next to the resort. The views and relaxing areas throughout the resort also make it a perfect escape for those who are less mobile and just looking for a love place to relax and have a change of scenery couple with good food and wine.
