Hi Everyone,
St. Moritz is not just a destination, it’s a legend. One could say, the most famous winter sports destination in the world. Having hosted the very first European winter sports week in 1928. It continues today to be a glamorous stage for the international jet set. Recently the NZZ quoted it as being the most expensive ski resort in Switzerland. However it is truly so beautiful that I can understand why it really is a must see destination for everyone’s bucket list.
Last week I was fortunate enough to be invited by St Moritz tourism to experience the start of the winter season. One of the best time of the year to experience the true St Moritz glory without the crowds. I visited with my dear travel partner in crime Beatrice from “Ask the Monsters”. Together we tend to come up with crazy ideas, and after saying no 100 times I decided to “mostly” letBeatrice have her way. So there’s some funny content for you to enjoy further down.
Did you know that St Moritz was the first place in Switzerland to have electric lights? Regardless of your answer I am certain you will enjoy reading the latest “Top 10 Insider Tips for St Moritz”
Top 10 Insider Tips for St Moritz
1. Horse and carriage ride
Any trip to St Moritz simply wouldn’t be complete without a romantic horse and carriage ride that takes you along the river and then into the forest. I felt as though I was visiting Narnia, so very special. Simply our horse and carriage without another soul in sight.
On the way back to St Moritz we even got to hear one of the locals playing the alp-horn. Doesn’t get much more romantic than that!
2. Conditorei Hanselman
Conditorei Hanselmann is one of the oldest and most renowned cafes in Switzerland. Even today it remains as one of the places to see and be seen in. Take a box of house chocolates or famous nut cakes home as the perfect souvenir.
3. Tony Kelly World
Tony Kelly World is a fine art photography studio that deliciously captures the essence of luxury in St Moritz. The gallery situated in the heart of the village is certainly an experience for any photography lover. Beatrice and I decided to replicate some of his wonderful motifs. This was the one time I told her she had a total of 10 seconds to take the photo – smile!
4. Seganiti Museum
The Segantini Museum is perched on a small hill as you enter St. Moritz. Architecturally, the building looks somewhat like a mausoleum. Inside are the works of the Italian artist Giovanni Segantini, famous for his unique way of capturing the Swiss mountains on canvas.
5. Leaning Tower of St Moritz
Hard to believe but it’s true – St Moritz has a leaning tower that leans even more than the leaning tower of Pisa! The base of the tower is newly secured every 10 years to ensure it doesn’t crumble. This was just done in 2024 so we are now good for another 10 years!
6. Lunch up the mountain at Salastrains
One of the very uniques things about St Moritz is that you can actually drive with a car up the mountain and enjoy lunch in the middle of a ski piste.
Salastrains is a family run hotel with the most friendly Patronage and delicious local recipes.
7. Glattfelder
Glattfelder is a hidden tea, coffee and caviar house. Also run be several generations. It definitely has the best caviar I have ever tasted and supplies all of the major hotels in St Moritz. The shop itself is hidden so despite having visited St Moritz several times perviously, I never knew it existed! There is even a special tasing room at the back – be sure to visit!
8. Chesa Futura
Chesa Futura means house of the future in Romansch. This house is a true delight for anyone remotely interested in architecture. Designed by the renowned English architect Norman Foster and completed in 2014.
Some of its key features include; sustainable design, aesthetic appeal with its egg like shape and 2’500 larch shingles and environmental sensitivity. The timber is a renewable resource, using locally cut timber which responds naturally to the Engadin valley.
9. Tea at Badrutt’s Palace
One thing to be sure, the Badrutt family has a much bigger influence on how St Moritz became what it is today than anyone can image. I truly recommend you do some research about this.
Tea at the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel is a magical experience to be sure. For one chances are high that either Coco Chanel or Brigitte Bardot sat in the very same chair as you. The wonderful interior that will set you back in time and the fact that you can not get to the front doors without walking past a Rolls Royce are features that simply set it apart from the rest of the world.
What truly impressed both Beatrice and I is that despite the austanticity of the hotel, the hospitality is unbeatable, even for those who only come for a cup of tea! No wonder several celebrities have literally converted the Palace into their personal homes over the years!
10. The Grace La Magna Hotel
The Grace La Magna Hotel is where we resided for our 2 night/3 day stay in St Moritz. I would certainly recommend that you request a room in the Grace wing. Each room has unbeatable large windows overlooking the lake. Enjoy a bath with full lake view …
The breakfast is ever so cute with the croissant trolly that visits each table and supplies you with the freshest of croissants expertly filled with a filling of your choice – I am still dreaming of these, and trying to get my Hubby to provide me with the same service at home – hehe.
The wellness area is very beautiful but above all both Beatrice and I fell in love with the kids room where we both found our inner selves. It is true! Hiding in the book shelves, climbing up the wall, crawling into the playhouse and then serving each other cake from the toy shop… just as well we snuck in outside of the official opening hours – hehe!
Some more hotel images…
Conclusion:
If you haven’t yet, NOW is the time to put St Moritz on your bucket list and say “hi” from me when you visit!
