The Magic Mountain Hotel Rediscovered – Waldhotel Davos

Hi Everyone,

Isn’t this a magical view to wake up to! Directly from my wonderful room in the Waldhotel Davos. A hotel with an interesting history behind it. Also referred to as the Magic Mountain Hotel…

We all know Davos as a wonderful ski resort and home to the World Economic Forum. However originally Davos was a health resort. With a surreal mix of Germans, American pilots, refugees and Swiss crossing paths on the snowy streets and sanatoriums in Davos.

The Waldhotel Davos has a special history in that it was where the German novelist, Thomas Mann’s wife,  who was suffering from tuberculosis, resided for several months. In May and June 1912, Mann visited her. A visit that inspired his novel “The Magic Mountain“. A novel widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th century.

In honour of it’s famous past the hotel has maintained one room in the exact same state as it was during it’s days as a sanatorium. (Don’t worry no longer used as a guest room – smile).

This winter for the first time the Waldhotel Davos is operated by luxury hotel manager Raphael Herzog and his entire team from the Vitznauerhof which is currently closed for Winter.

The cosy newly renovated bar and entrance area make you feel welcome as soon as you enter the hotel.

Of course I fell in love with the Hot Chocolate Bar. Even more so once I was made my very own white hot chocolate to try…

The rooms:

There are 46 rooms with 9 different room categories. Most of them are south facing with fabulous views over Davos.

A small preview of our junior suite:

Waking up to this fabulous panoramic view really made me want to simply stay in bed all day with cups of tea (and possibly the odd glass of champagne).

Then in the evening, the fact that we could light our very own fire meant that once again in my heart of hearts I felt like hibernating in our wonderful room.

However we had a fun evening ahead, tasting the menu from the fabulous fine dining restaurant “Sens 1605″… 50 gourmet points with Jeroen Tamme Achtien as chef! He’ll cater for your every need – even special vegan menus can be prepared!

Starters…

Mains…

Desert…

After a great meal and good night’s sleep, what better way to wake up properly than  enjoying bit of wellness… not to mention the great treatments and fitness room also available! The pool has salt water – rumour has it this is better for the bones, especially after skiing…

A wonderful panorama trail starts just at the back of the hotel, leading right into the centre of Davos.

Once in the centre be sure to stop off at the iconic Kaffee Klatsch

Later finishing the evening off with a glass of bubbles at the bar and reading what the local Gazette has to say about the lovely rediscovered Magic Mountain Hotel!

Summary:

I can really see why the Waldhotel Davos was nominated as being the friendliest hotel in Davos. Hotel manager Raphael Herzog and his staff really do everything in their power to make you feel welcome. The view from our room was simply spectacular – the best I have had so far in Davos. Last but not least the food at the fine dining restaurant is a real experience. I love the fact they even cater for Vegan’s on request!
