Hi Everyone,
Following up from South Africa Part 1: Off the Beaten Track…
South Africa Part 2: Off the Beaten Track, takes us to the places where the country’s raw beauty reveals itself most honestly. As I always say, “the real magic begins the moment you leave the main road.” This chapter is all about an unexpected gem and quiet town nestled along a river. The sort of soulful stay, filled with stories that stay with you long after the journey ends.
“They say time stops for no-one, but perhaps with the right attitude and in the right company, it’s possible to slow down time, just enough to be truly in the moment”
A quote by Keith Bain which I read during our stay in South Africa. It seemed so fitting to describe this part of our journey that I simply had to include it in the introduction.
We finish the chapter with a drive along what I consider to be the most beautiful coastal road in the world.

Day 3: Mosaic Lagoon Lodge
Our next stop took us to Mosaic Lagoon Lodge, an eco-luxury retreat where we spent two wonderfully peaceful nights.
Our room was unlike anything I’ve stayed in before — a mix of understated luxury and the feel of a traditional African home. Natural textures, thoughtful details, and a cute pellet‑fed oven that kept everything cosy in the evenings.
Step outside and you’re met with wide‑open views across the river, with the mountains quietly framing the distance. Simple, romantic, and beautifully remote.
The Mosaic Lagoon Lodge is an all inclusive resort and meals were delicious.
Day 4: Enjoying everything the Mosaic Lagoon Lodge and its surroundings has to offer.
One of the things that makes Mosaic Lagoon Lodge so special is that every guest is paired with a dedicated guide who looks after you throughout your stay. They design a personalised itinerary based on the season and what you feel like doing — such a thoughtful touch and it really takes the pressure off planning.
We chose to start with a gentle river cruise, the perfect way to sit back, relax and take in the surrounding nature.
Afterwards, we headed into Stanford for a leisurely stroll through the village before returning to the lodge for lunch.
Stanford Village is a quaint village that balances old-world charm with modern allure. Located just 150 km southeast of Cape Town, this serene riverside town is a haven for nature lovers, food enthusiasts, and history buffs alike. We also discovered it is a favourite weekend retreat for people living in Cape Town.
Back at our lodge, lunch was a delicious portion of fish and chips. Knowing we also had a full 3 course dinner to come, Nicola and I were careful to order a half portion each.
In the afternoon, our guide took us on a nature walk where we learned about the local plants and their traditional healing properties. Surprisingly fascinating and a lovely way to connect with the landscape.
Nicola decided to finish the day with a relaxing massage – it was her recovery treat given that she was our designated driver – and a good one at that
Day 5: Leaving the Mosaic Lagoon Lodge and a beautiful coastal drive
Leaving Mosaic Lagoon Lodge and the once again ever so friendly and helpful staff wasn’t easy, but the drive ahead made up for it.
We had the most amazing weather day 5, almost like Summer so decided to take the coastal road to our next destination – Paarl, stopping in Hermanus to soak up the sea views. The picture above really shows the table we sat at for coffee and cookies.
Later stopping off at Stony Point to see the penguin colony — always a highlight.
It was one of those days where sunshine and seaside simply made us feel fabulous!
