Painting with Alec Monopoly at Tag Heuer!

One of the nicest things about blogging is the people you meet and some of the most unusual experiences/ invitations you get. Never in a million years did I ever think I would be graffiti painting the headquarters of Tag Heuer. Let alone with a famous graffiti artist, yet last week that’s exactly what I found myself doing!

Painting with Alec Monopoly at Tag Heuer!

Tag Heuer’s CEO Jean-Claude Biver has decided to bring art closer to the brand and has now commissioned ultra-hot American graffiti artist, Alec Monopoly, to be a provocateur for the brand. In future Tag Heuer shops  – starting the one in Miami – are to be turned into a type of art gallery. There will also be special watches painted by Alec.

Having  celebrated this in Miami in November, it was decided to celebrate again at the Tag head quarters in Switzerland with a group of journalists. I was lucky enough to be one of them. Little did I realise at the time that the event would start with each of us joining Alec Monopoly in spray painting the Tag Heuer garage wall!

So what makes a successful graffiti artist or anyone successful for that matter? Read on to hear what Alec Monopoly says…

10 Interesting facts about Alec Monopoly

1. New York born Alec Andon, now known as Alec Monopoly preserves his anonymity by always wearing a bandana.
2. His art career started at the age of 12 when he won his first art award. A painting of a wave which later sold for $500 – a lot of money at the time.
3. The name “Monopoly” comes from his main character. Created naturally during the time of the 2008 major Financial Markets crash as he was playing the game Monopoly, which he loves.
4. His one piece of advice to anyone regarding success is: Once you have found your passion just work, work, work.
5. He recently managed to trade 2 pieces of his art for one Andy Warhol – one of his favourite artists.
6. Whilst starting his graffiti painting with a group of friends he now prefers to go with his girlfriend and do the “romantic walk”, kissing as soon as there’s any sign of discovery danger.
7. One of his favourite things to do is go out into the streets at 3am and paint whilst the rest of the world sleeps.
8. He would never paint on a place that causes damage to an individual – where they would have to spend money to get it cleaned up.
9. Alec’s dream is to be exhibited in New York’s MOMA.
10. When asked if graffiti painting should be legalised the answer was no. It would otherwise be abused for advertising and it would take the fun of the thrill out of it!
