New Zealand’s Possum Merino – A European Favourite for Eco-Chic Style

Hi Everyone,

The other day I went into one of my favourite shops in Zurich, the newly opened House of Scotland, and picked up one of their long woollen cardigans. Expecting it to be quite heavy with so much wool and the length of it. However it felt like picking up fairy dust.

Curiosity got the better of me. I needed to know how it could be so light. It was then that I found out it was made out of possum merino wool by the New Zealand based company Noble Wilde. A cosy feeling swept over me with cute memories of my Dad buying me sweaters as a child each time we visited the South Island of New Zealand.

Just last weekend Mr FunkyForty and I were taking turns wearing the Noble Wilde Possum Merino Aviator Jacket, currently available in the House of Scotland – Zurich.

What makes possum merino wool so special is its unique blend of softness, warmth, and sustainability. Possum fur is hollow, which means it traps heat more efficiently than other natural fibres, making garments incredibly warm yet feather-light.

When combined with fine merino wool, the result is a luxurious fabric that’s breathable, pill-resistant, and gentle on the skin. Even better, using possum fibre helps control an invasive species while supporting eco-conscious fashion.

Growing up in New Zealand my early memories of the possum are of a squashed animal on the road. There were so many, especially in the South Island. Not a day used to go by without seeing one on the road. However you also need to know that the possum is one of the greatest threats to New Zealands natural environment. Introduced to the country from Australia, they occur in high numbers with barely a predator in New Zealand. For more information about why possums are considered a threat in New Zealand see here.
