To wear long or short in Summer. Does this dilemma ever hit you?

Each Spring I decide the coming Summer will be filled with long dresses and skirts for me. However as soon as the weather warms up and a long weekend is on the horizon I find myself longing for pretty, easy to wear short dresses. So the official conclusion is that a selection of both long and short is needed in every Summer wardrobe.

As with everything there are certain tips which will make sure both your long and short outfits look great…

My Tips for Wearing Long or Short in Summer

Let’s start with wearing long in Spring/Summer:

Long Summer dresses/skirts are a fabulous goto essential in Spring and for cooler Summer days. Being long they give you a little added warmth and it is easy to obtain a fresh Summer look whilst keeping warm but simply adding a denim jacket on top.

As a side note – 2022 is focusing on dark denim even for Summer.

Long Summer outfits are also great for hiding the fact you haven’t got a tan yet. Or at the end of a super hot sticky day to hide swollen legs…

Team your long dress/skirt with simple sneakers to keep the look carefree yet stylish. On super hot days replace the sneakers with flat slides.

Things to watch out for with your long skirts/dresses:

• Avoid the length half way between the knee and ankle – especially having skirts/dresses finish exactly there where your lower leg is the widest.
• Team long wide dresses with a cross body bag to add some shape back to your look.
• Long chunky necklaces also look great with long shapeless dresses.
• For 2022 it’s OK to go extra long to the floor – note though this is a trend thing and not a timeless look so leave it for your less expensive pieces.
• Long slim line dresses also make shorter people look longer!

 

Wearing short in Spring/Summer:

Let’s face it as soon as it gets really hot most of us are craving shorter Summer dresses. Like it or not pasty white and short is unfortunately never a really good look. Try to get a bit of colour on your legs in Spring so you’re ready for the first heat wave!

Wearing short as you age…

Honestly if you have the legs for it – wear your short skirt/dress as much as you like. The difference as you get older is where you can wear your short look. Save the super short look for beach or pool and stick to just above the knee or knee length for city breaks.

The best tips for short dresses as you age:

• Don’t let age ever stop you from wearing shorter knee or just above length dresses/skirts.
• Stick to good quality pieces. The trick is in the quality of what you wear much more than the length.
• Wearing a longer thin sleeveless vest over your short dress/skirt can be a great way of covering up unwanted bumps.
• Combining short dresses/skirts with heels to make the most out of your legs… age really doesn’t matter here.
