My Favourite Way to Wear a Maxi Dress in Winter

Hi Everyone,

There are some style tweaks which stay with us our entire lives. Despite often being called a chameleon in that I will try several different styles and looks I do have the one basic rule which I feel most comfortable with. It’s to do with heels and lengths. Of course in reality anything works, however for maximum effect, the longer the dress or skirt the lower the heel and vice versa!

” the longer the dress or skirt the lower the heel and vice versa”

Meaning of course that maxi dresses are to be paired up with flat shoes. Surprisingly, the first time I wore this dress with black super high pumps. It felt odd, at the time I didn’t realise why… and then finally it dawned on me. Ever since I’ve been wearing this dress with knee high boots. Note, knee high and not over the knee boots!

There will never be a coat long enough for this dress and whilst it’s OK to wear coats slightly shorter than the dress or skirt you have under them this Winter, this will never be a look I feel overly comfortable with. Instead I prefer to team a long dress with a waist length jacket. Fortunate to be photographing this in a slightly warmer place than Zurich so have a simple cord jacket on. In a colder climate this would be replaced with a thick leather jacket and matching scarf.

  1. Very well written done – it’s also my wish to put my summer dress also in winter – because our summer is to short. Lovely pics – thanks for that. keep in touch, Fatima

  2. It has been way too cold here to wear any type of light material dress but I will remember this outfit as you styled this maxi dress to perfection. The Newsboy Cap is the best accessory with this crisp and breezy, girly dress! Love it!

This outfit would be perfect to link up with my new Monthly “Skirting the Rules” linkup the last Tuesday of each month (link below). Thanks and have a great week! Ada. =)

  3. Hi, nice to meet you and your blog. I come out I’m just a guy who like to observe people including their looks, mostly from an artistic standpoint, I take inspiration for my personal style but often notice women style too, of course :). Indeed fashion is made of proportions as well and I also noticed lots of women wearing flats and low heels or sandals with long skirts or dresses and higher ones with shorter skirts and I agree that looked great!
So, yeah boots are also a nice idea, but I can also see you pairing them with flat ballets and sandals, like this https://www.gorgeautiful.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Maxi-Skirt-with-Sandals-or-Flats.jpg
have you tried it, sometimes? Btw the second image in this link indeed shows the long skirt paired with the short jacket and you were right about it making for a great look :). Nice too nutrients.me/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/winter-long-skirts-skirt-fashion.jpg
Also true that coats instead should typically be longer than the skirt hem.
Do you think mid calf or midis can work with kitten or mid-low heels or you’d suggest still flats.
Can I show you, though, an outfit where the coat is quite shorter than the long skirt
http://www.letsexpresso.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/tjori-407×600.jpg ? I’m curious on how would you see a look where a guideline is “broken”, in a way, if it show it can be done gracefully. Seems to me a way of using a coat like a jacket.
Or this https://www.instagram.com/funkyforty/p/BuA2kASle-d/, where the skirt is long and the heel is high. Yes, that’s you, I’m kidding, at first I saw other outfits where you seem to except that “rule”, but actually looking closer you are just wearing a very long coat, while the actual skirt is relatively short, like here.
For boots I always thought the higher the boot and higher the hem, generally, but knee boots here make sense, as the skirt is long but slit.
Mind that it’s not to be personal but to understand more of your style and if they are guidelines you live by most of the time as you said, plus I love details, which are sometimes however little, very critical to a look.
    See you soon.
