Even when the skies are grey and the temperatures are in their minus, there’s something magical about the Swiss mountains.

Especially Grindelwald. Only a 2 hour drive from Zurich with so much to offer. This is where you have spectacular views of the Bernese alps including the Eiger. Can take a cable car and funicular right to the top of the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, surrounded by glaciers and eternal snow, even in the height of summer. This is also where you’ll find the Grindelwald First Cliff Walk – not for the fainthearted, but with spectacular views. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – for more adventurous things to do check out outdoor.ch.

Driving into the village of Grindelwald, the four star superior Hotel Belvedere is the first hotel that comes up on the left. With its fabulous views over the Bernese Alps, incredibly helpful staff, super cute wellness area and a lovely family history-imagine owned by the same family for 120 years!  It really was the perfect place for Cassia and I to stay on our Mother-Daughter, Grindelwald getaway.

The Lounge With That View

Stepping into the Belvedere lounge felt a bit like walking into a postcard — except better, because postcards don’t come with armchairs, crackling fireplaces, or waiters who somehow always appear at the exact moment you’re thinking “a tea would be nice right now.”

Floor‑to‑ceiling windows framed the Eiger like it was posing just for us. Cassia and I sat there, sipping, chatting, and enjoying the view. Honestly, if the lounge had been the only thing the hotel offered, I still would’ve been happy.

 

Our Room — Cozy Chic With a Mountain Twist

Our room was lovely and spacious with a great balcony and view onto the Eiger.

The bed was so comfy that it was easy to crawl under the covers and fall into a deep mountain sleep. Each morning we opened the curtains, gasped dramatically, and took in our beautiful view before going downstairs for breakfast. Having our own Nespresso coffee machine and knowing that the first refill of our mini bar was complementary were added benefits.

 

Gondola Fondue — One of The Most Swiss Things We’ve Ever Done

If you haven’t eaten fondue in a vintage gondola, have you even been to Switzerland?

We climbed into our private gondola and soon after were handed a bubbling pot of truffle cheese fondue plus a bag of potatoes and a bag of bread cubes.

There’s something fun about dipping bread into molten cheese with the mountain lights twinkling in the background.

10/10 would do again.

 

The Cute Bar — Where Time Slows Down

After our delicious fondue we slipped inside into the cosy bar for dessert. The Belvedere bar is one of those places where you walk in and find yourself chatting away to others.

 

Breakfast  – The Best Butter Dispenser Out

Breakfast is a generous buffet with lots of healthy regional options. Of course my heart melted as I saw the cute butter dispenser… Grindelwald butter at its best if you ask me – smile!

Skiing Up the Eiger — Or at Least It Felt Like It

The next morning we hit the slopes. Taking the Eiger express up to the Eiger terminal is a lifetime experience in itself. Only 15 minutes now. Using the Eiger Express gondola cuts down travel time by 47 minutes compared to the old train route  and let me tell you, skiing beneath the Eiger is a whole mood.

Despite subdued weather conditions there was still something humbling about gliding along with that massive wall of rock towering above us.  Like nature reminding us who’s really boss, but in a friendly Swiss way.

The Jungfraujoch ski area is made up of 3 different ski areas, 211km pistes and 100km of winter hiking.

We didn’t go this visit but it is also totally recommended that you get the ticket to go up to the Top of Europe, Jungfraujoch itself at 3454m. It will be an unforgettable experience with ice caves and much more to see and do, plus one of the most amazing panoramic views ever. There’s even a Lindt chocolate shop at the top!

For organising fun activities and ski/snowboard equipment rentals my top tip is Outdoor.ch.

We had so much fun each time we went to the store – awesome service and really great equipment. Next visit we want to do the chocolate fondue float – my mouth is watering at the thought.

 

Spa Time — Because Ski/Snowboard Legs Need Love Too

After skiing, the spa was calling our names.

Spa pool, lap pool and even an outdoor pool with mountain views (usually – just not when we were there as it was snowing… also lovely). We floated between warmth and cool mountain air, feeling our muscles melt back into human form.

The spa pool was our favourite because of the warmth. Cassia loved the relaxing chairs. Perfect for reading.

 

Half‑Board Dinner — Where We Went Rogue (A La Carte Style)

Even though our stay included half‑board, we decided to go a little off‑script and order à la carte.

We went for the burger, because sometimes after a day of skiing and spa, you just need a really good burger. And this one was truly delicious. Juicy, flavourful, beautifully stacked… the kind of burger that makes you close your eyes for a moment of appreciation.

We ended the evening full, happy, a little sad that we would already be going home the next day. Thanks to Hotel Belvedere Grindelwald we certainly had a couple of very special mother-daughter moments!

 

One last little walk into Grindelwald village to look at the ice sculptures before driving back to Zurich.
