Magical Moments in Paris

Hi Everyone,

Magical moments in Paris is a very personal post for me. It’s also about spending magical moments with my Mum. Living half the world away means we have to really treasure the moments we can spend together.

Paris is our most favourite city together and holds many special memories for us. Each visit we like to delve into the history of where we are and through story telling let ourselves float away into a world far removed from our everyday lives.

1. Afternoon Tea in Paris Le Lobby

An experience that will surely remain in our memories for some time. I can certainly recommend lapping up the luxurious premises fabulous service and food so delicately presented it seemed to be pieces of art.

Fun Facts about the Peninsula Paris:

• Before being built as a hotel Russian millionaire Count Basilewski originally constructed his very own mini-Versailles on the same site.
• Opening in 1908 it was the first hotel to offer private bathrooms in it’s guest rooms.
• George Gershwin wrote “An American in Paris” in 1928 at the hotel.
• In 1973 the Paris Peace Accords that ended the Vietnam War were signed here.
• In-room electronics are powered by 2.5km of cable behind the wall of every guest room.

2. Dinner at Café Jamin – Hervé Rodriguez

It’s not every day you get to meet a Michelin star chef, let alone eat at one of their restaurants.

Hervé Rodriguez is every bit as passionate about cooking and his restaurants as his smile suggests. Despite having a Michelin star restaurant (MaSa) he deliberately wants to keep this one free from the stars. Making his wonderful gourmet restaurant also accessible to those with smaller budgets. In addition Hervé prefers to be able to go and speak with his guests personally.

Top: Seafood and chorizo (Spanish sausage), Bottom: crab ravioli served with a soup. A true explosion of flavours.

Each day there is a wonderful buffet of deserts displayed ready for patrons to select their hearts desire…

We chose the Ile Flotantte, consisting of meringue floating on crème anglaise (a vanilla custard).

When asking what inspired Hervé Rodriguez what inspired him to become a chef I learnt his Mother had a huge influence.

3. Hotel Etoile Saint Honoré

One is really spoilt for choice when trying to find a hotel in Paris. So much so that it becomes difficult to know which one to choose. This visit we stayed at Hotel Etoile Saint Honoré. Situated a 5 minute walk away from Arc de Triumph and definitely fabulous value for money.

We stayed in a Junior Suite (room 704) which starts from EUR 128 per nite. The 7th floor rooms have balconies – we had a wonderful view over Sacre Coeur.

Mini bar in the rooms is free of charge and each afternoon there is a happy hour with free drinks and nibbles for hotel guests.

4. Musee Baccarat

The one museum you won’t have to queue for. A few minutes walk from Trocadero in  the former mansion of Marie-Laure de Noailles, a French artist, regarded one of the 20th century’s most daring and influential patrons of the arts.

Famous for her friendships  with Salvador Dalí, Balthus, Jean Cocteau, Ned Rorem, Man Ray, Luis Buñuel, Francis Poulenc, Wolfgang Paalen, Jean Hugo, Jean-Michel Frank and others as well as her tempestuous life and eccentric personality.  One of her 3x-great-grandfathers was the Marquis de Sade.

The Baccarat shop located on the lower floor is just as impressive as the museum itself but it is wonderful to go upstairs, soak in the luxurious atmosphere and read about the history behind Baccarat.

In addition to the museum there’s a restaurant currently decorated by Philippe Starck.

This museum is a must for anyone remotely intersted in interior design, glass and history.

Located in the 16th arrondissement at 11, place des États-Unis, Paris, France. It is open daily except Sundays, Tuesdays, and holidays; an admission fee is charged.
