How to Decorate Your Home with Vases

Hi Everyone,

Despite our current cold spell, I promise you all that Spring is just around the corner. The best season ever for filling your home with flowers.

However today we talk about decorating with vases. A truly timeless way to add elegance, colour and personality to your home. If done correctly!

All vases featured in this post are currently available at a favourite store of mine – Heimlifeiss in Zurich, Seefeld. Each of these vases is hand blown and no two are identical.

Currently feeling as though I am in vase heaven here – smile!

Here are a few simple tips and tricks to help you choose the right vases for your home:

Consider the room:

The first step is to consider the room you are wanting to decorate. A living room usually calls for larger vases. If the room is small, stick to one statement vase. For larger airier living rooms you might even consider a group of bigger statement vases.

Bedrooms and bathrooms are often better suited to smaller, more delicate vases like the pretty green ones above.

Think about the colour scheme

Make sure that the vase you choose complements the colours you have in your room rather than clashing with them. If you already have many patterns in your cushions, throws or curtains it will be good to stick to one uniform colour such as the yellow vase above.

Plain/neutral coloured rooms can however be magically uplifted by adding a colourful patterned vase.

Think about the shape

When thinking about the shape the first thing to ask yourself is whether or not you intend to put flowers into your vase or whether it’s main purpose is simply decorative.

For flowers consider the type of flowers. If you mostly have long flowers such as Roses, Sunflowers or Hortensia – these require long vases so that their stems get plenty of water. Spring flowers however, are better suited to rounder shorter vases as they only need very little water.

If you ask me, every home needs at least one long and one round vase dedicated to flowers, in addition to any decorative vases you may have.

Create a focal point

Place your vase carefully in your room to create a focal point. The vase above looks to be telling a story – such as pretty vase needs to be placed so that everyone entering a room will see it.

Most important

Remember most importantly the vases you own should show a little of your personality and give you pleasure each time you look at them. You might even consider having a carefully selected collection which you showcase during different seasons.
