Looking back I can hardly believe it myself – but here’s the very real story of how I got to meet the dear, charming and fun Diane Keaton.
It all started in Summer 2023 on a flight to California. Scrolling through the movies available I was ever so pleased to see The Book Club 2 on the list.
Enjoying that film so much I decided if there was one movie star I would love to meet on our trip to California it would be Diane Keaton. Believe me I am not making this up!
Our California road trip took us to Los Angeles where we met up with my dear Kiwi friend John. He introduced us to some real culture by taking us to the Getty museum for the day. It was awesome. Mr FunkyForty and I had great fun seeing who could take the best architectural photos. I also mildly bothered John with impromptu phone filmmaking – the price you pay when spending time with me – haha!
Over lunch John asked me who was one famous person I would most like to meet on this trip. I promptly answered Diane Keaton.
Unbelievably, later that day in the museum bookstore Mr FunkyForty says to me; “look there’s Diane Keaton”. John agreed! I instantly want to ask for a photograph but the boys insist I am not allowed to speak to her.
Being the ever-obedient wife and friend, I left the building with them. However once outside I realised I needed postcards. Telling the boys to wait outside I dashed back in.
And there she was, right in front of me at the till buying a book. Apart from her assistant and the cashier, no one else was around. The opportunity was simply too good. SO I started conversation, saying that I just watched one of her films on the plane and absolutely loved it. Can you believe that out of nervousness I actually forgot the name of the film at that moment. Stupid, hated self for that second. She gave me a huge smile and asked, “Really? Are you sure? Which one?” Then I blurted – again stupidly – “You are Diane Keaton aren’t you?” She laughed and said yes. Her assistant kindly offered to take a picture of the two of us – so here I have a memory I shall treasure forever.
