Probably not a good idea to be watching a Don Leone movie on TV whilst writing blog post. History tells us there is a lot more to that little black dress than we give it credit today! In the 19th Century it was the inexpensive way to advertise one was widowed yet available for a new husband.
In 1926 Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel had a simple black dress in American Vogue. Calf-length, straight and decorated only by a few diagonal lines. Vogue called it “Chanel’s Ford”. Like the Model T, the little black dress was simple and accessible for women of all social classes.
Dior’s “New Look” in the post-war era and the sexual conservatism of the 1950s returned the little black dress to its roots as a uniform and a symbol of the dangerous woman.
Today it’s the one dress everyone needs in their wardrobe.

So (happily) not really a dangerous woman in black… but one black dress and a few fun ways to style it…
