Chilling to the Groove at Design HUUS Hotel – Gstaad

Hi Everyone,

One of my favourite passions in life has to be discovering hotels with a real difference. That’s exactly the best way to describe the design Hotel Huus in Gstaad. Set 1’111 meters above sea level in the heart of the Bernese Oberland.

I have actually visited this same hotel just over 20 years ago as used to belong to the Steigenberger. Now totally renovated with a brand new upbeat look and feel to it. What does remain however is the warm feeling of comfort as you walk in and even some of the original staff!

It’s the sort of place you can go to totally unprepared with literally only a credit card in your pocket. Once there you can decide what you would like to do and everything will be provided. The concept of the hotel can be neatly summarised in two words: Adventurous Hospitality!

The instant welcome

As you walk into the main entrance the first thing you see straight in front of you is the bar. Like a magnet I was drawn to it. Firmly planted myself on one of the stools and enjoyed a cool glass of Prosecco. The perfect refreshment after a 2.5 hour drive from Zurich.

Room with a View

Cosy warm colours used in each room giving it that real rustic mountain feeling yet maintaining an up to the minute design touch. The perfect place to test out an inviting bed by the Swedish brand Hästens.

Each of the 136 rooms and suites has a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.

I loved the fact that the bathrooms have a view onto the room and of course outside if you open the curtains. Not to mention oak wood and local stone features.

The Open Living Room

Responsible for the title of this blog post as the open living room is really the perfect place to simply chill to the groove of music played by resident DJ Ewald Klassen.

The room is so inviting once there you feel like you are on a discovery tour. Over 500 books and a ton of games and nicknacks (picked up at the markets in Paris), to keep your mind occupied.

With various seating clusters dotted throughout.

Food

In addition to the half board restaurant there is also “La Vue”, a restaurant nestled in a room behind the bar with fabulous mountain views.

Focus is on seasonal, wholesome cooking with organic, locally sourced ingredients.

This is what we ate the first night:

Top left: Salmon, top right Entrecote steak, bottom, Seasonal Salad with Truffle

On the second night we decided to pretend we were at home. Nestling down into one of the cozy sofas for a lounge cocktail and meal.

I devoured one of the best burgers I’ve ever tasted and Reto seriously enjoyed his Tartar!

For those that like a little snack in-between, there’s also a sushi bar…

Party room

Nestled one floor down from the main lobby is the coolest looking party room I have seen in ages… I can just imagine a Murder Mystery weekend taking place here – smile!

Wellness

They say they are not a wellness hotel yet at the same time you’ll find 2’000 square meters of spa area spread across 3 floors. Finish sauna, aromatic sauna, ice fountain, herbal steam bath name a few of the goodies.

The panoramic swimming pool is what really captured me – especially seeing the upside down mountain reflected in the water…

Guess I forgot to take off my ski glasses before going swimming – smile!

Skiing

We hadn’t prepared for this at all, leaving home with great plans of hiking or cycling rather than skiing. However when we got to Hotel Huus and saw the wonderful snow and sunshine our hearts melted.

Realising this CEO Günter Weilguni took us under his wings. Within minutes we were fully equipped to go skiing the next day without having left the hotel!

Other Outdoor Activities

We also went for a lovely run after our day skiing – felt very proud of self after this (haha). The picture below has to be the best Instagram setting ever!

Outfit from Lululemon

In Summer months there are many more outdoor activities available such as guided bike tours, nature walks, abseiling, river rafting and high rope course.

Find out more about these activities here.

Thank you so much for having us, we left feeling totally relaxed and continue to dream about our wonderful time at the HUUS Hotel Gstaad!
