Birthday Celebration at the Royal Savoy Lausanne Hotel & spa

Hi Everyone,

It’s not every day you get to be 89 years old, let alone reach that age and still be fit and healthy. However I am so happy to tell you about our dear Aunt Elisabeth who just had her birthday the other week. She comes from Switzerland but now lives in London and had been longing for fresh Swiss lakeside air, so we decided to give her a special treat as a Birthday present.

An amazing woman through and through with an ever so interesting past having had the job of running the Lufthansa office in London for many years. There is almost no country in the World she hasn’t visited and I love listening to her fantastic stories.

Lausanne holds special memories for her as she spent a stint there in her youth, helping a family whilst learning French at the same time. You can imagine just how excited she was when we told her we were taking her to the Royal Savoy Lausanne Hotel & Spa for her birthday!

Our celebration few days were nothing short of amazing. The staff did everything possible to make Elisabeth’s birthday a truly remarkable and memorable experience… starting with the fantastic birthday ribbon in her room and this list goes on.

A little history:

The Royal Savoy Hotel & Spa first opened in 1908. Originally called the “Royal Hotel” as the “Savoy” was a different neighbouring hotel. However later the two hotels merged into the “Royal Savoy” as we know it today.

The hotel has of course had many famous guests over the years. The Royal Family of Spain lived in exile at the hotel for some time and King of Thailand was also a regular guest.

The building has always been an iconic landmark in Lausanne and was recently (2015), reopened after an over CHF 100 million makeover, including adding a new garden wing and fabulous spa area.

Rooms:

The hotel has 196 rooms, 101 in the historic building (pictured above) and 95 in the new Garden Wing. We stayed in the new wing and absolutely love the special birthday decorations!

We loved the view from our balconies…

Each room, regardless of category has a lovely marble bathroom and it’s own Nespresso coffee machine.

Here a little look at a typical suite in the main building. Love the attention to detail and the little things that matter such as the incense sticks…

Spa:

Once settled into our rooms it was time to experience the beautiful spa area. 1’500 square meters of pure heaven for relaxation and beauty, not to forget the fabulous fitness room too of course!

With all the Fashion week travelling I had been doing, I decided it was time to treat myself to one of their fabulous back massages…of course to be followed by a dip in the lovely outdoor pool.

Dinner time:

Dressed for dinner and proving one can never be too old to kick some leg!!!

On the actual birthday night we ate at La Brasserie du Royal. Before entering this restaurant you walk through the so called “corridor of the senses” – a beautiful showcase of local products and special wines.

Someone was very happy with the extensive wine list…

Michelin star chef Marc Haeberlin is the signature chef of this restaurant … have a look at what we ate:

Nothing like a little fire cracker to set off the birthday mood – smile!

Day 2:

Blessed with fantastic weather in the middle of October we decided to take a boat over to Evian-Les-Bains in France.

Evian-les-Bains, famous for the Evian water is such a pretty place. I was in awe at the beautiful flowers still blooming so late on in the year.

Little things that matter:

Once back on Swiss shores we decided it was too early to simply go back to the hotel and instead had a little cheese and wine picnic whilst sitting at the waters edge…

The memory is so nice that ever since I seem to be dreaming of Swiss Emmental cheese and the lovely new Zurich Staatskellerei Merlot available here.

For our second evening we had dinner in the lounge bar…

Love the cosy atmosphere of this room with it’s fabulously high ceiling.

I had the most interesting meal of a whole Vacherin cheese that had been baked to perfection and served with potatoes. Needless to say I had to have help to finish this but I have been craving to have it again ever since!

During our stay the Winter chalet was in the throws of being installed and as I finish writing this article I have had photos sent of what it looks like now:

Please beam me back so that I can enjoy one of these wonderful Winter fondues – smile!
