A Touch of Magic in South Tyrol – Romantik Hotel Turm

Sometimes you find yourself visiting a place that simply has a certain magic around it. So much so that it stays in your mind for quite some time after. That’s exactly the feeling we had after visiting the Romantik Hotel Turm in South Tyrol.

From the outside you can’t really tell that this 13th century building is a hotel.  For starters, over 2’000 pieces of genuine art, an amazing wellness area with many unique features, state of the art fitness centre, a natural climbing wall and several dining areas.

Over the centuries the building served as a fortress, courthouse and prison, before finally becoming a hotel. Today it is run by Kathi and Stephan Pramstrahler (pictured above with their 4 children and the family dog). They are the 4th generation of Pramstrahler’s to be running the hotel. Stephan, with his famous chef background has recently managed to get the hotel it’s 5th star. Well deserved believe me!

The Rooms – Our Room

Each room is different. All very generous in size. You will find one special piece of traditional furniture in each room – a fabulous mix of super modern and old all in one.

This was our room. Check out the bathroom with two shower heads and a window in-between so it was possible to shower with a view of the Dolomites if you wanted to!

Dinner

We arrived relatively late in the day, Hence, soon after settling into our room it was time for dinner. Stephan Pramstrahler is one of the first pioneers in cooking with local ingredients so it’s no surprise that both dinner and wines came from the region.

The wine even came from the hotel’s very own vineyard – we visited it the next day. Photos later in this post.

Apero – prosecco served with home made breads and sticks.

At this stage I am kicking self for not writing down what we ate. It was the degustation menu which changes daily according to the season and fresh food available.

First starter –  Reto had a game lasagne, I had pork served with fresh cherry tomatoes. Note the label of the wine – each wine from the Hotel’s vineyard has it’s own special bird on the label.

Second starter – a wonderful fine pumpkin soup served with a deep fried ravioli.

First main course – I had tagliatelle with venison and Reto had fish ravioli. This is the only wine we had which did not come from Stephan’s own vineyard.

Second main course we both had lamb…

Then came the deserts…

On our second evening there was even a special apple strudel  buffet in the cellar bar which is typically also used for cheese fondue during winter months.

The Vinyard

The next day started with a tour of the hotel’s vineyard and farm buildings dating back to the 13th century but carefully renovated inside. Stephan was ever so proud (and rightly so), to show us everything. The venue is used for cooking lessons and other occasions such as hosting a local TV cooking show.

I was in awe at how everything had been built on such a very steep slope.

This is the kitchen today, where cooking events are held. You don’t want to mess with me whilst holding a rolling pin – smile!

Here the inside one of the rooms that can be booked with butler who brings and prepares your breakfast for EUR 200 per person… such a great deal. Next time I want to stay here!

Time for Wellness

The Romantik Hotel Turm really has the most amazing wellness area. I have seen many hotels but never one with such an interesting wellness area…

Last but not least – the outdoor pool with view of the Dolomites in the distance.

The Art

For those of you with even a remote affiliation towards art, this was like living in an art museum for a few days. Spotting new pieces wherever we looked.

This is just a small summary of all the Romantik Hotel Turm has to offer. Not to mention the beautiful area around, perfect for cycling, hiking, skiing or simply a trip to the nearest town Bozen.

I can only recommend from the bottom of my heart that you visit this wonderful gem of a hotel! Built up over 4 generations with humungous passion. The perfect place to ring a bit of magic into your own life!
