How to Successfully Style a Red Suit – Especially Over 40

Hi Everyone,

There’s no getting away from it – the trouser suit has returned. So much so that it must be the one major must have in every wardrobe. If you don’t wear suits to work you’ll still find it useful for date nite!

Bright red also featuring large in 2018, it only makes sense to own a bright red trouser suit. Many people claim red makes them look old or washes them out. The reality is that red simply needs a touch of careful planning to be worn just right and achieve maximum impact.

Keep on reading to find simple tips regarding how to successfully style a red suit – especially over 40.

How to Successfully Style a Red Suit – Especially Over 40

Team your red suit with a white top or tee. Stay away from cream as this tends to be ageing and will take away from the lovely effect of red.

Stay away from bright red lipstick and let the suit do the talking! Sounds funny coming from me – an avid fan of red lipstick. However truth of the matter is that when you wear red you want people to notice what you are wearing and not focus on the lips.

Decide on the impact you want to make. If you want to dress your suit down then wear it with sneakers. Otherwise pep up the look a little more with a lovely pair of sling-backs – one of this coming Spring’s favourite shoe designs.

Match the bag with your shoes – this is that 50’s rule that has returned to the surface big time. Every wardrobe needs one good staple black bag that will go with many things and be an eye catcher at the same time. Depending on budget it doesn’t need to be Gucci but do go for a good quality label.

When deciding on a suit style be careful to go for a pant style that suits you personally. Look at the difference just changing trouser styles can really have on the overall look:

Note how the 7/8 tapered trouser leg gives a more youthful fun look whilst the wider legged trousers look like serious business!

Not everything with an outfit has to be serious and expensive – sometimes it’s fun to add something a little off beat for fun. Recently I discovered these Stefano Lungo watches which come with 3 interchangeable straps – so much fun when you feel like adding a pop of something funky to your outfit.

In case you’re wondering…i’m still here so the car behind didn’t run me over – smile!

  1. I’ve worn suits most of my life for work, but that red is absolutely gorgeous!!! Love the shoes—love everything about this outfit. And your shot with the red sports car!! Adorable. Thanks for the update.

  2. I noted with interest your comment about matching your shoes and your bag. Every other blog tells us not to… What is your advice in this regard? Lise

    1. In the past this was true but if you look carefully there is a movement back to wearing matching shoes and bags.
It really depends on what the whole outfit looks like. if you don’t match your shoes and bag then at least make sure the shoes match with some other part of the whole outfit.
The exception to the rule seems to be the white boot trend – where white boots are worn to any outfit and the white isn’t teamed up with anything else. A very trend look at present.

      Have a great day, xxx
