Como – 3 hours from Zurich to Escape Winter

Hi Everyone,

There are those places in the world you simply fall in love with and need to go back to again and again. Como is one of those for me. When I first met my hubby we used to spontaneously decide Friday evening to go to Como for a nite the next day. Just that little change in scenery made a huge difference to coping with the next stressful work week.

In the past we always went to one favourite hotel and had one favourite shopping tour – see post here. We also never went in Winter. So today is about trying a new hotel and getting into the Christmas spirit in Como.

Como – 3 hours from Zurich to Escape Winter

It was raining cats and dogs all the way down to Como (except for up high where it was snowing). However because our Hotel Villa Flori is situated right on the lake it still had some romantic charm despite weather.

Rooms

First things first…time for a little tour of the rooms…

Every room has full frontal lake view – so romantic. I would however ask for a balcony and room with a wooden floor. The most basic room has carpet and no balcony. Everything else about even the cheapest room is just as lovely.

Attention to furnishing detail throughout the hotel is really lovely.

Bathroom vibes… Love the fact that you still get a full supply of Etro soaps and creams to try out.

Rooms start from around CHF 240 including breakfast and can be booked here.

Como City

After unpacking and a small tour it was time to venture into town. As the hotel is situated outside of Como city we were super happy to find out there is a boat 5 minutes walk away that takes you into the centre of town in just 8 minutes for Euro 1.30 per person! How cute is that!

Being Winter it got dark very early. This is catching the boat back to the hotel after our little Apero and shopping spree.

Note the blue and white Venice like pole. They say in general any European city on a lake will have a little Venice theme somewhere. In Zurich it is just outside the Storchen Hotel.

The great thing about Como is it doesn’t matter where you go for apero it will be reasonably priced or even cheap and you always get plenty to eat with it.

All photos in town simply taken with i-phone as we didn’t want to lug camera around in grotty weather.

Once again banned from any clothes shopping, I concentrated on food instead – hehe! Como has a number of these great food stores dotted throughout – each one absolutely stuffed with the most delicious Italian delights you can think of.

New tip is a Truffle shop that opened up a few months ago – we bought Truffle honey, paste and oil – yummy!!! More info here.

The cutest surprise for us were the lovely Christmas lights.

Dinner

We decided to try out dinner at the hotel itself. It is imperative to start with a glass of Italian bubbles first!

Beef Carpaccio, followed by tagliatelle with Truffle and then cheese as desert.

Sundays are for sunshine

This is the fabulous thing – whilst the weather was still bad in Zurich, we woke up to the most amazing sunshine…

Perfect time for some skin pampering – more about that here.

Breakfast

A true Italian style buffet with all sorts of sweat pastries. Eggs, bacon, cereal etc also available.

For those of you who like fitness, it was later that morning I discovered the fitness sauna area…

Of course I didn’t really do any exercising in these clothes! Did however love the fact that you have full lake views whilst exercising – next visit you will certainly find me here – if not to exercise then to enjoy the sauna area.

Taken from a communal sunbathing balcony up on the top floor near the spa area.

Driving back

We had some spectacular views driving back to Zurich via the San Bernadino tunnel (pass already closed).

All in all a fabulous way to escape Winter blues in Zurich.

Thank you  for having us!
